IV Vitamin C and Cancer
The following articles include a number of studies and case reports supporting the use of vitamin C, oral and intravenous, and other antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Vitamin C serum levels of 4 dl/liter has been shown to potentiate interferon levels and improve immune function. Direct anti-cancer effects have also been demonstrated. National Institutes of Health studies have shown that high enough doses of Vitamin C are able to reduce tumor size, which they believe is due to local production of H202 induced by IV Vitamin C. Sufficient levels to create these benefits cannot be obtained with vitamin C taken orally or by eating fruits and vegetables. Only intravenous administration can raise serum levels adequately.

Thirty years ago, scientists were aware that vitamin C might be effective in killing cancer cells. It’s too bad that vitamin C cancer research, compared to drug research, is still just getting off the launch pad. But lately we’ve seen some very promising progress in the use of intravenous vitamin C (IVC) for cancer treatment.
When attacking cancer with vitamin C, absorption is the key issue. For instance, 10 grams of IVC prompts blood levels of the vitamin that are many times higher than that achieved with the same amount of the vitamin when taken orally. A revealing lab study in which researchers at the National Institute of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) exposed normal cells and 10 types of cancer cells to a dose of vitamin C that could be easily reached using intravenous vitamin C. In five of the cancer cell types, about half of the cells were either killed or apoptosis (cell “suicide”) occurred. Vitamin C exposure also halted most of the growth of surviving cancer cells. The normal cells were completely unaffected.
In 2006, the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) published the details of three IVC/cancer case studies:
Case One: A 51-year-old woman with kidney tumors refused conventional treatment. Instead, she received 65 grams of IVC twice each week. She also used other supplements such as N-acetylcysteine and niacinamide. After 10 months of IVC, her tumors were gone. Her cancer remained in complete remission for four years, at which point she was diagnosed with lung cancer (she had been a long-time smoker). She began IVC therapy again, but it wasn’t successful in treating the lung cancer. She died one year later.
Case Two: A 49-year-old man with a bladder tumor and multiple satellite tumors, declined chemotherapy and radiation. He began an IVC regimen of 30 grams twice each week for three months, followed by 30 grams once every two months for four years. During those four years he sometimes took more frequent treatments. Nine years later, the man is in good health with no recurrence or spreading of the cancer. Other supplements used in this patient’s regimen include flax oil, selenium and alpha lipoic acid.
The authors of the CMAJ article note that standard treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer is complete or partial bladder removal. When treated without surgery, this cancer type “almost invariably” spreads to other organs “within a short period.”
Case Three: After receiving six weeks of radiation therapy to treat lymphoma, a 66-year-old woman declined chemotherapy and began receiving 15 grams of IVC twice each week for two months. She continued with a less frequent IVC regimen for another 19 months. Ten years later the patient is in good health and cancer-free. In addition to vitamin C, the patient also took a variety of supplements that included beta-carotene, CoQ10, N-acetylcysteine and a multiple vitamin.

Addendum to above (2007): According to the Chicago Tribune, the FDA has given Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) approval to launch an IAA trial. Christopher Lis, CTCA’s vice president of research and development, told the Tribune that the trial’s first phase will be limited to 18 cancer patients who have used conventional treatments without success. Researchers will attempt to establish an optimal therapeutic dose.
The Tribune also interviewed Jeffrey Blumberg, a Tufts University professor of nutrition, who noted that IAA might reduce chemotherapy side effects. It appears that IVC not only successfully addresses some cancers, but for some patients it also relieves the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy. Here’s an example: “My best friend has been on the chemo routine for cancer (non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma), she has had 5 chemotherapy treatments every 6 weeks. She is also getting 50 grams of vitamin C intravenously three times a week. She has had no side effects from either, in fact she goes shopping after the chemo, and leads a normal life. During the Christmas holidays she discovered that it’s the vitamin C that is preventing side effects from the chemo, as she wasn’t able to get the treatments. After 7 days without C she was in pain all over & had sores inside her mouth. When she went back after 10 days for a treatment of vitamin C she was feeling much better just during the drip of C. The next day she was completely fine again.”

NOTE: This is an excellent 10 year old review of mainstream published literature including papers from National Cancer Institute that using Vitamin C in cancer is well founded and that orally and intravenously administered vitamin C has value in the treatment and prevention of cancer.
Why Review the Scientific Literature?
Proper basic nutrition is an essential foundation for health, but there is a growing awareness that it’s not enough. One has only to consider the high disease rates in our society – infectious diseases are now the third largest killer in the US as well as the first in the world, and our rates of cancer, arthritis, and mental illness are not abating – to realize that we have to go beyond basic nutrition in combating disease. It is time to look at supplemental nutrients in a serious light, in order to better understand their role in helping our natural immune defenses prevent disease, and in altering the course of disease as well. People talk about orthodox medicine and alternative medicine as if there’s a great divide between the two, but there’s really no need for such a dichotomy. The bottom line in healing and in maintaining health is really the question; what works? And we should feel free to ask it in evaluating the offerings of both realms, and to combine the best of both. After all,
the evidence that something works – not the label you give it – is the important factor in evaluating whether a given treatment, or mode of prevention, is of value. Following is a review of the scientific literature as it pertains to the impact of vitamin C on cancer. The questions, “What works?” and “How might it be applied?” were the motivational ones behind this review. As this one does, each review will include only well-designed studies from peer-reviewed journals. Original journal citations are given, along with capsule descriptions of the original scientific abstracts.
In other words, what follows is not anecdotal evidence; it is scientific evidence. We can now move beyond the stage of allowing quackbusters, apologists for special interest groups, and other adherents of the flat-earth school of intellectual inquiry to maintain that there’s no evidence of the disease-fighting value of nutrients. Because, quite simply, there is, and here it is. This review article notes that approximately 90 studies have been done on the role of vitamin C in cancer prevention, with most finding statistically significant effects. Protective effects have been shown for cancers of the pancreas, oral cavity, stomach, esophagus, cervix, rectum, breast, and lung.

Daily supplementation of lg of vitamin C decreased the amount of chromosome damage induced in lymphocytes by an exposure to bleomycin during the last 5 h of cell culture. The authors suggest a similar assay for genetic instability might be helpful in detecting heterozygotes for chromosome-breakage syndromes and recommend considering dietary and lifestyle factors when interpreting results from this bleomycin assay and related assays for genetic instability.

A ternary antioxidant vitamin mix consisting of ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol and lecithin as well as a rosemary extract with carnosic acid and carnosol as the two major active ingredients were shown to exhibit strong antimutagenic effects in Ames tester strain TA102. Ascorbic acid was held responsible for this inhibitory property in the vitamin mix, while carnosic acid was identified as the antimutagenic agent in the rosemary extract. The authors conclude that these antioxidants might exhibit anticarcinogenic properties.

A mixture of ascorbic acid and cupric sulfate significantly inhibited human mammary tumor growth in mice when administered orally, while the administration of either alone did not. The activity of D-isoascorbic acid was similar to that of ascorbic acid. The authors suggest ascorbic acid’s anti-tumor activity was due to its chemical properties rather than the
metabolism of ascorbic acid as a vitamin.

In this study, vitamin C was shown to decrease kidney tumor incidence by approximately 50% in Syrian hamsters, lower the concentration of diethylstilbesterol-4′,4″-quinone, the genotoxic metabolite of diethylstilbestrol, in vitro and in hamsters treated with stilbene, and
decreases the levels in hamsters of DES-DNA adducts formed by the quinine metabolite. Noting that estrogens may spawn tumors by their metabolic oxidation to corresponding quionone metabolites, the authors argue that vitmain C may inhibit the formation of tumors by decreasing concentrations of quinone metabolites and their DNA adducts.

This paper reports on the results of two large-scale studies of L-ascorbic acid in the food on tumor-free survival in mice. The first found that increasing ascorbic acid in the diet significantly delayed the development of spontaneous mammary tumors, with the median age at first tumor at 124.9 weeks in the highest-dose ascorbate group and 82.5 week in ad libitum controls. The proportion of mice with tumors was also reduced. The second discovered a significant effect of ascorbate in delaying the onset and reducing the incidence of malignant lesions. Approximately five-times the number of mice developed lesions in the zero-ascorbate as in the high ascorbate group after 20 weeks of administration.

Ascorbate stabilizes the normal state of the avian tendon cell by reducing Rous sarcoma virus production and promoting the synthesis of differentiated proteins which allows the virus to coexist within the cell rather than completely take it over.

Noting theories that ascorbic acid might lower the risk of gastric cancer by preventing their formation within gastric juice, the authors measured both gastric juice ascorbic and total vitamin C in subjects and found that ascorbic acid is secreted into the gastric lumen so that gastric juices are frequently higher than concentrations in plasma. Gastric pathology affects
this secretion, leading to values in gastric juice that are lower than plasma levels.

This case-control study evaluated the association between specific substances of the diet and invasive cervical cancer in four Latin American countries. Vitamin C was shown to significantly decrease the risk of invasive cervical cancer, as was the case with beta-carotene and other carotenoids. These results are consistent with those from other studies suggesting a protective role for vitamin C in the development of invasive cervical cancer.

2,974 men participating in the third examination of the prospective Basel Study in 1971-1973 were measured for plasma antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E, and carotene. Low mean plasma levels of carotene adjusted for cholesterol and of vitamin C was associated with overall mortality from cancer. Lower mean vitamin C levels were found to increase the risks of stomach cancer and gastrointestinal cancer in older subjects. In light of these results for
vitamin C, in combination with those of the other vitamins studied, the authors conclude that low levels of antioxidants are associated with an increased risk of mortality from numerous cancers.

Inverse relationships were found between intake of carotenoids, vitamin E, and vitamin C and the incidence of lung cancer among nonsmokers in a 20 year follow-up study of 4,538 initially cancer-free Finnnish men. The authors suggest that increased intake of these nutrients may protect against the development of lung cancer among nonsmokers.

NAC administered in doses from 0.1 to 10 mmol/L reduced the number of mutagenic-induced breaks per cell in a range from 23% to 73%. In a dose range from 0.01 to 1 mmol/L, ascorbic acid reduced chromosomal breakage by 21% to 58%. These results illustrate NAC and ascorbic acid’s protective effects mediated in vitro against mutagen-induced chromosomal damage. The difference in occurrence of head and neck cancer between population with varying diets may be explained by related in vivo phenomenon.

Human neoplastic cell lines MCF-7 (breast carcinoma), KB (oral epidermal carcinoma), and AN3-CA (endometrial adenocarcinoma) were studied relative to the effects of in vivo administration either in combination or alone of sodium ascorbate (vitamin C) and 2-methyl-1,4-napthoquinone (vitamin K3). When administered separately, vitamin C or K3 showed a growth inhibiting effect but only at high concentrations (5.10(3) mumol/1 and 10(5) nmol/l, respectively). When administered in combination, both vitamins showed a
synergistic inhibition of cell growth at 10 to 50 times lower concentrations. The addition of catalase to the culture medium containing vitamins C and K3 totally suppressed this tumor cell growth inhibitory effect. The authors argue this suggests an excessive production of hydrogen peroxide as being implied in mechanisms responsible for the tumor cell
growth inhibitory effects.

The effects of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and H202 on metabolic parameters critical for cell survival were examined in cells with low and high ferritin content in the presence and absence of ascorbate in this study. Human neuroblastoma SKN-SH cells were pretreated with 100 microM FeSO4 and 10 microM desferrioxamine, respectively, for 24 hours yielding cells with different ferritin contents. The most pronounced effects were in ferritin-rich cells and in the presence of ascorbic acid. Using isolated CCC PM2 DNA, 6-OHDA and ascorbic acid caused strand breaks that were prevented in the presence of mannitol or desferrithiocine. H202-mediated strand breaks were observed only in the presence of ascorbic acid. The authors suggest their data along with the results of previous studies, suggests that high dosages of ascorbic acid continuously applied may be an effective new
approach in neuroblastoma therapy.

In this study, mice were fed one of three diets both with and without sodium ascorbate (30 mg/ml) in the drinking water starting 2 weeks before inoculation of 10(6) melanoma cells. Mice fed the purified diet experienced inhibited tumor growth in some cases, while it had no effect on others in the commercial diet group, ascorbate stimulated tumor growth. In mice fed the deficient diet, ascorbate inhibited tumor growth and survival was increased by 82%. Unlike mice fed the commercial diet, drug treatment reduced growth significantly in mice fed the purified diet and moderately increased their survival. Drug activity was enhanced and the survival of tumor bearing mice increased by 73% as well in the deficient diet group. Drug and ascorbate therapy combined resulted in mice fed the purified diet
experiencing smaller tumors and living 55% longer than controls. Deficient diet fed mice who were administered the same combination experienced slowed tumor growth and their survival time was increased 123%.

This study involving patients with acute non-lymphocytic leukemia found that the numbers of leukemic bone marrow cell colonies grown in culture were decreased 21% of control in 7/28 patients by adding 0.3 milliM of L-ascorbic acid to the culture medium. Concentration of L-ascorbic acid, as low as 0.1 milliM, was capable of suppressing the leukemic cell colony in cultures of both leukemic and normal marrow cells. However, 1 milliM of L-ascorbic acid
was required for suppression of normal myeloid colonies. Based on their results, the authors argue that the achieved suppression was a specific effect of L-ascorbic acid and was not due to its oxidation-reduction potential or pH change since normal hemopoietic cells were not suppressed while leukemic cells were selectively affected at an L-ascorbic acid
concentration attainable in vivo.

This in vitro study on the effects of L-ascorbic acid (LAA) on the growth of human leukemic colony-forming cells (L-CFC) demonstrated that L-CFC growth suppression by LAA is observed in one-sixth of leukemic patients, L-CFC enhancement in one-third of patients, and that L-CFC growth enhancement is a significant discovery with a biological mechanism as the basis.

Eighty-one patients with pre-malignant lesions of the oral cavity were given 30 mg of beta-carotene, 1000 mg of ascorbic acid, and 800 IU of alpha tocopherol daily for nine months, 55.6% experienced either complete or partial clinical resolution of their lesions. Based on these findings, the authors recommend the use of antioxidant supplements as a treatment for oral pre-malignant lesions.

This study examined levels of vitamin C and ascorbic acid in the gastric juice of 77 patients suffering from dyspepsia. Gastric concentrations of vitamin C and ascorbic acid were significantly lower in chronic gastritis patients and patients with hypochlorhydria were found to have particularly low levels of ascorbic acid concentrations.

In this placebo-controlled study, vitamin supplementation was examined in relation to its effects on cell kinetics in uninvolved rectal mucosa patients with colorectal adenomas. Vitamins A, C, and E were administered to 20 subjects 6 months after complete polypectomy. Results indicate that supplementation was successful in reducing abnormalities in cell kinetics that may indicate a precancerous condition.

This case-control study of 419 colon and rectal cancer patients found that dietary vitamin C intake resulted in reduced risk of rectal cancer in women.

Noting that the use of ascorbate to treat cancer began in 1971, this case-control study involved over 300 patients with cancer who received 2.5 g of vitamin C four times a day in combination with standard surgical treatment and radiotherapy (a few cases of chemotherapy). Two hundred sixty-six patients with incurable cancer were found to benefit significantly from the vitamin C therapy which was shown to have significant benefits for
those suffering from cancer of the stomach and colon, while there was a similar trend for those with cancer of the bladder. Based on their results, the authors conclude that ascorbate in high doses can improve survival in certain types of cancer.

This study found that large amounts of vitamin C administered in drinking water reduced benzo(a)pyrene (BP) induced tumors in mice, resulting in an extended survival time for those animals exposed to the carcinogen.

The administration of ascorbic acid (0.1-20 micrograms/ml for the first week) was found to suppress X-ray induced transformation of C3H1OT1/2 cells in a concentration-dependent manner after irradiation. Cells initiated by radiation remained vulnerable to ascorbic acid up until the moment of morphological phenotype expression. Based on these findings, the authors postulate that expression of the neoplastically transformed phenotype is promoted by reactive oxygen species and peroxy radicals generated in cells during the whole assay period and they suggest their data might be helpful as a guide for chemopreventive efforts against radiation carcinogenesis.

Ascorbic acid had been demonstrated to interact with a number of tumor-inducing compounds, such as precursors of N-nitroso compounds to prevent tumors. Animal and in vivo studies have also shown ascorbic acid disrupts tumor promotion. Based on a review of the existing evidence, the authors conclude that vitamin C can inhibit the formation of some types of cancer.

Ascorbic acid administered alone had no effect, nor did it when in combination with flavone.

Studies have also shown vitamin C is capable of inhibiting tumor cell growth and carcinogen-induced DNA damage. In vitro and
animal studies have demonstrated that vitamin C inhibits the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines.

Previous research has shown ascorbic acid to be cytotoxic to neuroblastoma cells in vitro and in vivo. In this study, ascorbic acid proved to be more cytotoxic than Dehydroascorbic acid in neuroblastoma SK-NSH cells. It was also discovered that uptake of [14C] ascorbic acid and [14C] Dehydroascorbic acid was impaired by glutathione and diethiothreitol. [14C] Dehydroascorbic acid was partially reduced to [14C] ascorbic acid once inside the cell. The
authors argue that their results add support to previous beliefs that ascorbic acid acts as a pro-oxidant inside neuroblastoma cells and they recommend the use of ascorbic acid in treating neuroblastoma.

The increasing concentrations of ascorbic acid also inhibited cell growth, and significantly reduced the number of colonies formed by the cell grown in soft agar. Such results suggest the differentiation of osteoblasts may be effected by the presence of ascorbic acid.

When 75 microM of ascorbic acid was administered to cells at a low density of 5 x 10(3)/ml for 1 hour, DNA synthesis was inhibited at 37°C. Treatment at 42° significantly enhanced the inhibition. In the absence of ascorbic acid, DNA synthesis failed to be inhibited. Treatment with 75 microM ascorbic acid and hyperthermia at 42°C in cells transplanted into mice also prolonged the survival time relative to untreated cells. Based on these findings, the authors recommend that ascorbic acid and hyperthermia be considered for the treatment of cancer.

Catalase greatly decreased the damage ATP C+ cells suffered from exposure to ascorbic acid. These findings led the authors to propose that the inhibition of cell multiplication by ascorbic acid is the result of the H202 formed by its oxidation and that those cells most resistant to its toxic effects have the greatest amount of catalase.

Vitamin C Stops the Growth of Some Cancerous Tumors in Mice

30 years ago the famous Nobel laureate Linus Pauling said that vitamin C supplements can prevent cancer, a highly controversial statement at the time. A team of Johns Hopkins scientists, led by Dr. Chi Dang, have shown that vitamin C stops the growth of some tumors in mice. The study found that the antioxidants’ actual role may be to destabilize a tumor’s ability to grow under conditions where there isn’t enough oxygen to feed it. The conventional belief is that vitamin C helps prevent cancer growth by grabbing up volatile oxygen free radical molecules and preventing the damage they do to our DNA. “The potential anticancer benefits of antioxidants have been the driving force for many clinical and preclinical studies,” Says Dang. “By uncovering the mechanism behind antioxidants, we are now better suited to maximize their therapeutic use.”
The researchers caution that while vitamin C is crucial to our health, you should not rush out and buy antioxidant supplements in bulk just to prevent cancer. This study is only preliminary and more research will be needed. The researchers discovered the antioxidant mechanism while looking at mice that had been implanted with human lymphoma (blood cancer) or human liver cancer cells. Both cancers produce high levels of free radicals; they found that they could suppress the free radicals by feeding the mice supplements of vitamin C or N- acetylcysteine (NAC), both powerful antioxidants.
When the researchers examined the cancer cells from the diseased mice not fed the antioxidants, they noticed that their DNA had not been significantly damaged. “Clearly, if DNA damage was not in play as a cause of the cancer, then whatever the antioxidants were doing to help was also not related to DNA damage,” says Ping Gao, Ph.D. This discovery led Gao and Dang to suspect
that other factors were involved, such as a protein called HIF-1 (hypoxia-induced factor). They found that this protein disappeared in mice that received vitamin C treatment; it is usually abundant in untreated cancer cells. “When a cell lacks oxygen, HIF-1 helps it compensate,”
explains Dang. “HIF-1 helps an oxygen-starved cell convert sugar to energy without using oxygen and also initiates the construction of new blood vessels to bring in a fresh oxygen supply.”
Fast growing tumors can consume enough energy to effortlessly suck the available oxygen from everything that is close to them, thus making HIF-1 crucial for survival. HIF-1 can only function normally if it has fuel to keep it going; it needs free radicals. The researchers found that
antioxidants remove the free radicals, thus stopping HIF-1, and the tumor. They confirmed the importance of the hypoxia protein by creating cancer cells with a variant of HIF-1 that did not require free radicals to function. In these cells antioxidants had zero effect on the cancer.

Is vitamin C a placebo?

NPR’s Morning Edition ran a piece this morning on Vitamin C featuring a medical researcher from Consumer Reports. The conclusion was that Vitamin C in mega-doses provides nothing but flatulence and diarrhea, according to the many studies they have reviewed. In the past, I’ve taken Consumer Reports to task over dietary and medical assessments. As I’ve often said: If you want an exhaustive comparison and evaluation of air conditioners, toaster ovens, and MP3 players, Consumer Reports is the place to go. But for insights into alternative medicine, dietary considerations, and supplement use, again and again, CR just doesn’t get it right.
Do large doses of vitamin C cause flatulence and diarrhea? They certainly can. That’s how you know you’ve reached “bowel tolerance.” It’s a signpost that says, “You’ve exceeded your personal limit for vitamin C.” But anyone who points to studies showing that the ONLY thing you get from vitamin C is flatulence and diarrhea (I’ve never seen any such study) is ignoring the vast number of studies that offer overwhelming evidence of vitamin C’s importance to our health.
It is possible that the CR researcher correctly noted that two trials in the 1970s tested vitamin C as a cancer treatment and found the vitamin to be ineffective. High doses were used, so you can be sure that diarrhea was a common side effect. But these are the studies that mainstreamers always single out to dismiss vitamin C therapy for cancer. The problem is, they’re ignoring the most important aspect of these studies: The cancer patients were given oral vitamin C. As we’ve seen in subsequent trials, vitamin C is an effective cancer fighter ONLY when administered as intravenous ascorbic acid (IAA). A 1971 IAA clinical trial with 50 terminally ill cancer patients, and a similar trial in Scotland a few years later showed that IAA therapy extended the expected life spans of the subjects.
The medical mainstream has little interest in mounting studies that might reveal the effectiveness of vitamin C in cancer therapy. Drug companies and oncologists stand to lose a lucrative source of profits if a relatively inexpensive therapy works just as well as chemotherapy or radiation. There are a couple of IAA/cancer studies underway, but until we get those results, we’ll have to rely on case studies, such as the following.
According to a report from Boston’s CBS affiliate, Denise McCabe reacted to chemotherapy for breast cancer as many do: She felt so debilitated that she “couldn’t get off the couch.” After several rounds of IAA to address her cancer (which had spread to other parts of her body), Ms. McCabe felt better, had more energy, and her cancer markers started to drop. Unfortunately, the report is short on details, such as the number of IAA sessions she had, what the dosage level was, and if any other nutrients were combined with the ascorbic acid. Nevertheless, she credits IAA with saving her life.

Vitamin Use in Cancer Care: The Controversy

The use of vitamins—and antioxidants in particular—during cancer therapy has a long history of controversy. Many pioneers in the field of cancer care and research—Drs. Charles Simone, Ralph Moss, Kedar Prasad, and Keith Block, among others—have sifted through the conflicting research and offer an alternative viewpoint from many in allopathic medicine and the mainstream media. Life Extension Foundation has an excellent bibliography of the science behind using nutritional supplements with cancer therapy.
Dr. Simone and his colleagues did a comprehensive review of the medical literature regarding the use of vitamins along with chemotherapy and radiation in a two-part article in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. He notes that the prejudice against supplements originated from an erroneous statement made in a 1997 New York Times article by a Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital physician who contended that vitamin C interfered with chemotherapy and radiation in humans. Despite the fact that statement had no basis in scientific fact, the caution against vitamin use while undergoing chemo or radiation has been promulgated by the vast majority of the oncology community.
The controversy continued with the recent publication of research from Sloan Kettering that suggests that vitamin C protects cancer cells from chemotherapeutic agents and that antioxidants such as vitamin C should be avoided during cancer therapy. In those experiments, mice given vitamin C before their chemotherapy actually had faster-growing tumors than mice not fed vitamin C, and human cancer cells in a culture pretreated with vitamin C were 30-70% more resistant to chemotherapy agents than cells not pretreated with vitamin C.
However, the president of the American College for Advancement in Medicine, Dr. Jeanne Drisko (professor of orthomolecular medicine and director of the Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center), says that the experiment was faulty, making its results worthless. The researchers used dehydroascorbic acid, not vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Dehydroascobic acid is somewhat toxic to humans, according to Dr. Drisko, and the body works very hard to keep the blood levels of dehydroascorbic acid at a minimum. Also, because mice make their own vitamin C, mouse results might not apply to humans.
Dr. Ralph Moss has also reflected on the controversy in his column “War on Cancer” in the November issue of The Townsend Letter. Dr. Moss studied a review article entitled “Should Supplemental Antioxidant Administration Be Avoided during Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy?” that appeared in a recent issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Moss focused on a discussion of the famous Bairati study (sometimes known as the Laval study) on the use of synthetic beta carotene and synthetic alpha tocopherol during cancer treatment. This decade-long study contained the bombshell that the harmful effect of synthetic vitamins was entirely restricted to one group—smokers. There was also a decided difference between those who consumed beta carotene in their diet versus those who received synthetic beta carotene in supplemental form.
Many mass-market supplemental multivitamin and mineral preparations contain synthetic beta carotene. The Vitamin C:Vitamin K3 System – Enhancers and Inhibitors of the Anticancer Effect

The oxidizing anticancer system of vitamin C and vitamin K3 (VC:VK3, producing hydrogen peroxide via superoxide) was combined individually with melatonin, curcumin, quercetin, or cholecalciferol (VD3) to determine interactions. Substrates were LNCaP and PC-3 prostate cancer cell lines. Three of the tested antioxidants displayed differences in cell line cytotoxicity.
Melatonin combined with VC:VK3 quenched the oxidizing effect, while VC:VK3 applied 24 hours after melatonin showed no quenching. With increasing curcumin concentrations, an apparent combined effect of VC:VK3 and curcumin occurred in LNCaP cells, but not PC-3 cells. Quercetin alone was cytotoxic on both cell lines, but demonstrated an additional 50-percent cytotoxicity on PC-3 cells when combined with VC:VK3. VD3 was effective against both cell lines, with more effect on PC-3.
This effect was negated on LNCaP cells with the addition of VC:VK3. In conclusion, a natural antioxidant can enhance or decrease the cytotoxicity of an oxidizing anticancer system invitro, but generalizations about antioxidants cannot be made.
